چکیده

When reconnguring distributed systems, either because failures and/or repairs have occurred, or because the workload requirements have changed over time, an alternative connguration has to be selected, thereby taking performability and costs, i.e., quality of service, requirements into consideration. In this paper we will present the use of Markov-decision models to decide upon such reconngurations. This seems to be a promising approach when the number of possible alternative conngu-rations is limited. In that case, reconngurations can be prepared well, so that the actual decision process during the real-system operation can be performed pretty fast.

On Reconnguring Query Execution Plans in Distributed Object-relational Dbms

Massive database sizes and growing demands for decision support and data mining result in long-running queries in extensible Object-Relational DBMS, particularly in decision support and data warehousing analysis applications. Parallelization of query evaluation is often required for acceptable performance. Yet queries are frequently processed suboptimally due to (1) only coarse or inaccurate es...

PRISM: Probabilistic Symbolic Model Checker

In this paper we describe PRISM, a tool being developed at the University of Birmingham for the analysis of probabilistic systems. PRISM supports three probabilistic models: discrete-time Markov chains, continuous-time Markov chains and Markov decision processes. Analysis is performed through model checking such systems against specifications written in the probabilistic temporal logics PCTL an...

Distributed Fault Diagnosis Using Consensus of Unobservable Markov Chains

A fault diagnosis procedure is proposed based on consensus in a group of local agents/experts. Local models are represented by Markov chains and modelling consensus as a mixture of these allows estimation of optimal ratings using an EM framework. To deal with the unobservable case the procedure is extended to accommodate Hidden Markov models (HMMs). Index Terms Fault diagnosis, consensus algori...

Availability analysis of mechanical systems with condition-based maintenance using semi-Markov and evaluation of optimal condition monitoring interval

Maintenance helps to extend equipment life by improving its condition and avoiding catastrophic failures. Appropriate model or mechanism is, thus, needed to quantify system availability vis-a-vis a given maintenance strategy, which will assist in decision-making for optimal utilization of maintenance resources. This paper deals with semi-Markov process (SMP) modeling for steady state availabili...

Simple models of distributed co-ordination

Distributed co-ordination is the result of dynamical processes enabling independent agents to coordinate their actions without the need of a central co-ordinator. In the past few years, several computational models have illustrated the role played by such dynamics for self-organizing communication systems. In particular, it has been shown that agents could bootstrap shared convention systems ba...
